Smooth is operated by Smooth Money Financial Technologies Pvt Ltd. This page explains how to request deletion of your Smooth account and what happens to your data when you do. There is no "OOPS undo" button after this.

Read carefully:

From the Smooth app:

The fastest way is from inside the app. It takes about 30 seconds to start, and the process completes in roughly 30 business days (we have to give your money back and unwind your SIPs with the exchange before we can close the door).


From the Smooth app:

  1. Open Smooth and tap your profile picture in the top-left

  2. Tap Account details

  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Delete smooth account

  4. Review what's about to happen — your SIPs, your money, your visions

  5. Tap See ya smooth, then confirm with Delete (cries internally)


You'll land on a status screen that tracks the deletion in real time: SIPs cancelled → money returned → visions deleted → account permanently closed.

No access to the app?

Email us at privacy@smooth.money from the email address linked to your Smooth account. Include your registered phone number. We'll verify it's you and process the request manually within 7 business days.

What gets deleted:

Once your request completes, the following is permanently deleted from Smooth's systems:

  • Your profile (name, email, phone, profile photo)

  • Your visions (Dubai Fund, Paris Fund, and any others you created)

  • Your nominee details

  • Your in-app activity, preferences, and notification history

  • Device identifiers and analytics tied to your account

What we have to keep, and for how long

A chunk of your data sits with regulated third parties (BSE, AMCs, the Registrar and Transfer Agents, your bank) and with us under Indian law. We can't delete this even if we wanted to:

  • KYC records (PAN, Aadhaar reference, address proof, photo, video KYC): Retained for 8 years after account closure, as required by SEBI and the PMLA, 2002.

  • Transaction records (SIP orders, redemptions, bank transfers, UPI mandate history): Retained for 8 years, as required by SEBI and AMFI.

  • Mutual fund holdings at the AMC/RTA level: Smooth is a distributor, not a custodian. Your folios continue to exist with the AMCs even after your Smooth account is deleted. To fully exit, redeem your investments before deleting your account (the in-app flow does this for you).

  • Tax-related records (capital gains statements, TDS): Retained for 8 years per the Income Tax Act.

  • Communications under legal hold: If there's an ongoing dispute, investigation, or regulatory inquiry, we retain related records until it's resolved.

After the retention periods above expire, this data is also deleted or anonymised.

What happens to your money

Before we delete anything, we cancel every active SIP and transfer your full balance back to the bank account on file. Credit usually lands within 2–3 business days. You'll see the exact amount and destination account on the deletion status screen.

If you have units that haven't been redeemed yet (some funds have lock-ins or exit loads), we'll flag this in the app before you confirm. You can choose to redeem and wait, or proceed knowing those holdings will remain with the AMC under your PAN.
